“Mikon!”

Tears rose to Mikon’s eyes, and he fought them down, stepping forward to wrap

his arms tightly around his smaller brother, his face buried in clean dark-blond curls, both of them shaking with all the emotions they had withheld for so long.

Finally Mikon drew back a little, holding his younger brother’s shoulders as he

anxiously looked him over, not knowing what to expect. Surely his brother had been

harmed in light of what the Masaari expected of their captives.

Yet Jakob seemed fine, though highly emotional as he clung to Mikon as though his

older brother would disappear from beneath his touch.

Mikon tugged him closer again and they stood together, letting the fear and anxiety

of the past days drain away in the joy of each other’s presence.

Mikon glanced up, nodding as he saw Satarin gesture discreetly to a nearby bench

at the side of the vast salle. He thanked the Imar for all of this with a silent glance and the Imar dipped his head in acknowledgement, before turning away to give them

privacy as he joined the other Masaari who had been practicing before their arrival and who had immediately knelt upon Mikon and Satarin’s entrance.

Mikon had felt nothing but discomfort at the ceremonial respect and he hoped to

the hells that they had been responding to Satarin.

As Kei, would he deserve such a gesture? Gods, he hoped not.

But for now, there was only Jakob. He guided his brother to the bench, their steps

almost awkward as they tried to hold each other close enough to satisfy their emotions.

After they seated themselves, Jakob tried to burrow his way into Mikon, clutching

at him and plastering himself against his older brother’s side.

Mikon made soothing noises in his throat, fear rising. This was so unlike Jakob,

who had a sunny, outgoing personality so different than Mikon’s surly antisocial

demeanor. This emotionalism was so unlike his younger sibling.

At last Jakob drew a deep breath and raised his head, tears making wet tracks down

his cheeks.

A rage rose in Mikon’s chest at the sight and he wanted to snarl at unknown

opponents. He would protect his brother at any cost, and damn the consequences.

“Are you hurt, Jakob? Gods, what have they done to you?”

Jakob sat up straighter, a harsh, strangled laugh echoing from his throat. “It does

not matter what they have done, it was more the fact they would tell me nothing of you, 73

only that you were the Savior, that you were their god’s beloved. I did not know what

that meant, and as time passed and I saw nothing of you, I feared…”

“Oh, brother.” Mikon hugged him close, feeling the shudders running through his

sibling’s body. “And here I was worrying about you, for I could get no information on

you either.”

Jakob reached up and ran a hand over Mikon’s face, worry and fear clear in his

eyes.

“What happened? What does it mean being the god’s beloved? Have they hurt

you?”

Mikon wondered how he could begin to explain the complexity of what he had

fallen into, when Jakob did not believe in past lives any more than he did.

“They think I am the reincarnation of their god’s consort.
